Abstract

The Use of Leitmotif in the Musical Composition "It's Okay to Not be Okay" with Piano Quintet Format

"It's Okay to Not be Okay" is a musical composition for a piano quintet formation created to represent the five stages of emotions found in the theory of the five stages of grief. The theory of the five stages of grief is proposed by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and discusses the emotional stages that individuals go through when faced with grief. This research is done with the intention of understanding why the message and meaning of the five stages of grief theory are important to convey, as well as how the "pick-a-note" technique is applied as part of the leitmotif representing the grief theme. The methods used in the creation process include formulating creative ideas, determining the title of the composition, observation, developing conceptual and basic musical sketches, determining instrumentation, refining the composition in detail, and writing it in notation software on the computer. The results of this research indicate that the meaning and message found in the theory of the five stages of grief are important to convey as they can serve as a means of self-reflection for the listeners. Furthermore, the "pick-a-note" technique is applied to the leitmotif by combining it with a melody that has a fixed interval.
