Abstract

Strategy for Overcoming the Technical Challenges of Fingering and Two Legatos One Staccato on the Cello in Paganini's Rossini Variations

Variations on a Theme by Rossini written by Paganini and transcribed on the cello instrument by Murice Gendron is originally a work for violin and piano. Gendron maintains the authenticity of the work to play the entire part with only one string which is generally said to be difficult. This work begins with a beautiful bel-canto aria melody, then varied in a fast, charming, interesting and enjoyable tempo, so that many violinists and cellists play it in the closing of concerts or recitals. The purpose of the study was to overcome the fingering technique that often changes position because it is played on one string and the technique of two legato one staccato in a fast tempo. The research method used is a qualitative research type with a musicology approach, with data collection stages in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study are the fingering technique of Variation on a Theme by Rossini written by Paganini can be overcome using the one-string scale from Carl Flesch, the thumb scale, arpeggio, shifting, artificial harmonic, fingering in all positions from Louis Feuillard's etude, and stretching and moving  thumb  fingering  from  Dotzauer's etude.  The  two  legato  one  staccato bowing technique can be overcome using several friction variations from Kreutzer.
