Abstract

The documentary film “Ning Nung Ning Gung” is a creative work that focuses on revealing the philosophical meaning embedded in the sound pattern ning, nung, ning, and gung within the musical tradition of Reyog Ponorogo. As musical innovations continue to emerge in the contemporary era, younger generations increasingly shift away from understanding the philosophical foundations of this sound pattern. This condition generates a collective concern and underscores the need for critical documentation that can bridge intergenerational knowledge and interpretation.

This creative research employs an applied ethnomusicology framework through visual ethnographic methods, including participant observation, in-depth interviews with elders and practitioners of Reyog Ponorogo, and reflective audiovisual documentation. This methodological approach provides space for informants to articulate their perspectives authentically while positioning the filmmaker as an active participant within the dialogical process constructing the narrative.

The results of this creation highlight concerns about the fading philosophical understanding among younger practitioners. The film functions as a medium for knowledge transmission and strengthens collective awareness of the importance of maintaining musical pakem while still allowing space for innovation rooted in tradition. This work is expected to serve as a cultural archive and educational tool for the preservation of Reyog Ponorogo, particularly following its designation by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in the category of in need of urgent safeguarding. The documentary aims to stimulate critical dialogue regarding the sustainability of Reyog traditions amid continued musical modernization.
