The Representation of Love in the Lyrics of the Butterfly Song: Barthes's Semiotic Analysis
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the representation of love in the lyrics of the song Kupu-kupu by Tiara Andini through Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The primary focus of this research is to identify the denotative, connotative meanings, and myths contained in the symbols within the song's lyrics. The research method used is qualitative with a semiotic analysis, where the research data consists of song lyrics taken from an online source. Data is collected by observing the Kupu-kupu lyrics, which are then analyzed in depth using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The data analysis technique involves three stages: first, the analysis of denotative meaning, which reveals the literal meaning of each symbol; second, the connotative analysis to explore deeper meanings related to the feelings of love depicted; third, the identification of myths formed through the symbols in the song. The results show that the lyrics of this song depict love as a feeling that affects both the physical and emotional aspects, with symbols such as blushing cheeks, a pumping heart, and butterflies representing the freedom of love. Love is portrayed as a force that strengthens relationships, offers sincerity, and maintains happiness. In conclusion, the lyrics of Kupu-kupu create a profound, dynamic, and freely evolving representation of love in line with the myths of love in popular culture. This finding contributes to the development of semiotic studies of Indonesian music by enriching the understanding of how symbols in song lyrics construct social and emotional meanings within the context of local culture.
