PENGEMBANGAN MOTIF BATIK MAJAPAHITAN KONTEMPORER DALAM MENDUKUNG KEBERLANJUTAN INDUSTRI KREATIF BERBASIS KEARIFAN LOKAL
Abstract

Contemporary Majapahitan Batik Motif Development in Supporting the Sustainability of Local Wisdom-Based Creative Industries. Majapahitan batik represents one of the most significant expressions of local cultural heritage, carrying high historical, philosophical, and aesthetic value. However, it faces sustainability challenges within the context of the contemporary creative industry, particularly regarding limited motif innovation and product development capable of meeting market demands without eroding its local wisdom values. This study aims to examine and develop contemporary Majapahitan batik motifs in support of the sustainability of local wisdom-based creative industries. A qualitative method was employed through a case study approach informed by practice-based research. The research process involved batik motif design practice as an integral part of knowledge creation, supported by data collection techniques comprising observation, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation. This study produced five contemporary Majapahitan batik motifs through a process of visual reinterpretation of Majapahit artefact elements, such as temple ornamentation and cosmological symbols, rendered through stylisation of form, composition, and colour that is more adaptive to modern market sensibilities. The development of these motifs not only contributes to enhancing the aesthetic and economic value of batik products, but also plays a role in preserving cultural values and strengthening local identity. Accordingly, the development of contemporary Majapahitan batik motifs represents an innovative strategy for supporting the sustainability of local wisdom-based creative industries.
