Abstract

Global Research Trends and Directions on Creative Thinking Skills in Music: Bibliometric Analysis and Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

Music plays an important role in humans across various aspects, including biological and cognitive, emotional and psychological, social and cultural, creativity development, and self-expression. Creative thinking has become an important skill in the 21st century, including within music (KBK). Currently, research on mapping KBK research in music remains limited. This study aims to (1) map the trends in CTI research in music over the past two decades, (2) examine the patterns of author and country collaboration and their productivity, (3) map the direction of scientific development, and (4) summarise evidence-based CTI improvement interventions. The study uses a multi-method approach, namely, bibliometrics and systematic literature review. Data were retrieved from Scopus and selected using the PRISMA protocol. Bibliometric analysis covered 62 journal articles (2006–2025); the SLR focused on 19 experimental studies that met the eligibility and weight-of-evidence criteria. The results show that publication trends have generally increased. Author collaboration networks are relatively weak, though productive clusters exist in Israel and the Czech Republic. At the country level, cross-country collaboration remains fragmented, with China being the most productive (25 documents). Co-occurrence mapping revealed three clusters: applied-pedagogical, conceptual-theoretical, and psychological-perceptual. Future research should integrate digital technology and online learning, strengthen teacher education, and examine individual factors. Cluster analysis shows that CBT research in music is not only related to education but also to physiological and psychological aspects. SLR synthesis of 19 experimental studies shows that all interventions, both creative models/pedagogy and technology, have a positive impact on CBT improvement. In general, the findings in this study emphasise the need to strengthen international collaboration and interdisciplinary research to enrich the creative ecosystem in music education.
