Murals as a Medium for Animal Welfare Activism: A Case Study of Animal Friends Jogja in the UGM Area, Yogyakarta. Mural art is often encountered as a medium to express what exists in the imagination of its artists. A study of mural art in the areas of Jalan Agro and Jalan Karangmalang, UGM, is important, because besides expressing the artist's imagination, these works also advocate for animal welfare rights that have long been neglected. This paper seeks to explore how the mural artists of Animal Friends Jogja use visual art to voice issues related to animal welfare. The data collection methods used are observation and photo documentation analysis. The data analysis method employed is Roland Barthes' three messages. This paper reveals that the choice of location, the materials depicted, and the messages intended are strategies used by the Animal Friends Jogja mural artists to voice their opinions. The works of these mural artists are also inseparable from Roland Barthes' concept of the three messages. Furthermore, these animal welfare activist mural artists depict the cruelty with which humans treat animals through their artworks.
